Leave 10 South Sound Individual and Professional Advisor Champion
- Who or what inspired you to become a Leave 10 Champion?
The many organizations I have served via a seat on their Board of Trustees or other volunteer opportunities have allowed me visibility to see the need is great. Writing a check is welcomed, but planning for a longer term, more sizable gift can be transformational. I was raised in a family that strived to tithe 10% or more, so the Leave 10 Pledge becomes an extension of that giving. Evelyn Ryberg and the Greater Tacoma Community Foundation staff have played a prominent role in this journey, particularly in their encouragement of my obtaining the Chartered Advisor in Philanthropy professional designation. I am also inspired every day by my clients, who give so much of themselves and their treasure back to the community. It’s equally inspiring to see an individual or family of limited means making a pledge to support others with a gift that is meaningful and scaled to their net worth.
- What does being a Leave 10 Champion mean to you?
It is an opportunity to lead by example. As an advisor, I embrace both short and long term planning and spend my days assisting others in meeting their goals, including philanthropic intention. I now have skin in the game and am happy to publicly declare it. Being a Leave 10 Champion is an opportunity to ensure our legacy reflects how we lived our life. I am excited to be an ambassador in this movement and encourage others to join in.
- How do you incorporate the mission of Leave 10 into your personal and professional life?
Personal: My husband Paul and I have started a Donor Advised Fund. This provides a vehicle to build assets for future giving and where we can make regular contributions and encourage others to do the same. We can then leave a bulk sum of 10% of our estate at our deaths to funnel our charitable giving into this fund. We have also included our adult children in these conversations and invited them to participate in the grant process. Their response to us declaring our intent to leave 10 percent of our estate to charity: “That makes sense…you’ve always given during your lifetime, why wouldn’t you do that at your death?” Sharing this mission with our family, and with our friends, is all part of the wonderful philanthropic journey.
Professional: In my role as Managing Director and Private Wealth Advisor at Wells Fargo Private Bank, I speak with individuals and families every day about their charitable giving plan. By taking a holistic approach to clients’ overall wealth management needs, my team and I can incorporate their giving plan into their overall financial, estate, education and risk management plans. As a professional advisor, clients rely on me to ask the right questions, find the right strategies, and bring a team together to assist them in implementing solutions to address their stated goals.
- What do you hope Leave 10 can do for our community?
Having been born and raised in Tacoma, I am so proud of the way the Leave 10 South Sound movement has caught fire and grown so much faster than it has in larger communities. We are a community who embraces providing for our most vulnerable citizens’ needs such as food and shelter, while also leaning in to fund accessible arts and culture. We are a diverse community. We are a gritty city. I support (amongst other causes): education for our children, the performing arts, health care initiatives and the advancement of a diverse, equitable work force. Imagine if everyone left 10% in support of their own preferred causes?
5. Is there is anything else that you would like to share?
I recently finished reading the book “I Will Always Write Back” by Caitlin Alifirenka and Martin Ganda. This true story shows the impact one person—a 13 year old no less—could have on another person who lived in another country. Their two communities became intertwined in this giving and everyone was the better for it. A 13 year old was the change agent and the domino effect was impressive and life altering for all, the givers and the receivers.
Philanthropy: via late Latin from Greek philanthropia/philanthropos—meaning Love of Man.
